The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 237 LEONARD, Leon WWII Leon joined the Army in 1943 at age 19. He went to Maple Creek for his basic training and then to Nova Scotia for training in light artillery and shipped out on July 1 to Scotland. He then went to England, where he had more training; then transferred to heavy artillery as a driver of a battle wagon for the officers. From England, he landed at Juno Beach in France and then traveled the west coast of France to Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was stationed in Germany after the war, guarding a concentration camp for a week. He came close to being injured many times and was glad to get home. He married and farmed at Ogema, where he and his wife raised six children. His favourite wartime song was “Lili Marlene” and favourite poem was “Flanders Fields.” LESSER, Conrad WWII Conrad joined the Army as a Private on May 28, 1942 and was discharged on April 22, 1946. LIDSTER, Bill WWII Bill was born on April 25, 1914 at Earl Grey, Saskatchewan, to Myrtle and Jack, and moved with the family to the White Fox area. He married Enid McIntosh in 1940, and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 and trained at St. Thomas, Ontario, and #4 service flying in Saskatoon. On June 30, 1946, Bill, Enid and their son, Jack, moved to Detroit, USA, where Bill worked as a carpenter for 30 years. He retired in 1976. LEVITSKY, Steve WWII Steve was born at Gronlid, Saskatchewan, in 1924 to Anna and Stephen and came with his parents to the Pine Torch area in 1941 and helped them farm and also worked in saw mills. He joined the Canadian Army in 1942 and served in Canada and overseas. When he returned, he bought the home place from his parents and married Marjorie Hollinger in 1954 and raised one daughter and were foster parents to 18 foster children. Steve is now deceased.
