The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 233 LAYH, Albert WWII Albert was born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, in 1925 and joined the 1st Division 11 Tele Op Section on March 27, 1944, serving in Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Central Mediterranean area and was discharged on June 3, 1946. After the war, he married Audrey and they raised a family of three children and retired to Bonnyville, Alberta. He received the Italy Star, the France/Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the 1939-45 War Medal. LAYH, Andrew WWII Andrew was born south of Marchwell, Saskatchewan, in 1922. He joined the Regina Rifles (Infantry) as a rifleman in March 1943 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Holland and Germany, and was discharged in March 1946. He was at the battlefront of the liberating Army and was in Germany when peace was declared. He came home New Year’s day in 1945 and returned to the Marchwell district to farm. Andrew had a simple life and loved fishing, playing cards and gardening. He also had a love for painting by numbers and hooked rugs for endless hours. He retired from farming in 1977 and moved to Langenburg in 1988. Andrew never married but had a special friend, Shirley. LEADER, Francis “Frank” BOER WAR & INDIA Frank was born in Slough, England, in 1871. He joined the British Imperial Army in 1889 and was stationed in Ireland and went to war in India in 1891. In 1899, he served through the Boer War in Africa and was discharged being found to be medically unfit for further service on May 15, 1901. In 1906, he came to Canada with his wife and family. Francis is deceased. LEACH, Edward A. WWII Edward was born in Ashton, Ontario, in 1918. He joined the 65th Tank Transport Co RCASC serving in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany from June 1942 to November 1945. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal, the France/Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal. Edward has been a member of the Wadena Branch #62 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 52 years.
