The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 169 GARTNER, Eugene WWII Eugene joined the Navy in 1943 at age 20 and trained as a gunner and was on the gate boats that patrolled the Halifax Bay and was also a Quartermaster taking his basic training in Saskatoon and then transferring to Cornwall, Nova Scotia. He was on the destroyer “Haida” and went on the North Atlantic run. While in Halifax, he married Lillian Power after the war, and was discharged in 1946. They came back to Saskatchewan and he went to Moose Jaw Technical School for one year to take an electrical course and then went farming in 1948 in the Dummer District. GATEY, Peter WWII Peter was born in Walpole, Saskatchewan, in 1921, son of Michael and Mary Gatey. He joined the Westminster Regiment (motor) RCIC and went overseas serving in Continental Europe. He was killed in action on September 2, 1944 near Montecchio, Italy, at only age 23. He is buried in the Montecchio War Cemetery. He enlisted in British Columbia and there is a mountain named in his honour, north of Mission, British Columbia. GIBSON, Walker Gleason WWII Walker was born in Alameda, Saskatchewan, on February 13, 1913. He joined the Navy on June 13, 1944 and served in the Acct. Branch RCN VR and was given a compassionate discharge on June 12, 1945. He was married to Clarice Reed and they had three children. Walker took over his father’s farm equipment dealership and was a very active member of the Alameda Branch #267 of The Royal Canadian Legion and the community. He passed away on March 5, 1997. GIBB, Robert WWII Robert was born in Lintlaw, Saskatchewan, on July 24, 1924. He joined the 16th and 22nd Saskatchewan Horse, serving in England and Germany as a tank gunner. He received the Canadian Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal and the France/Germany Star. Robert had been a member of the Lintlaw Branch #23 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 62 years before he passed away in 2008.
