The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 165 FULLER, Charles R. WWII Charles was born in Earl Grey, Saskatchewan, in 1918. He joined the Regina Rifles Regiment in 1943 and served in the medical unit as a stretcher bearer in England, Holland and Germany. He was killed in action on February 19, 1945 and is buried in the Groesbeek Cemetery, Nymegen, Holland. FUNK, George C. WWII George was born on August 2, 1918 on the homestead near Dinsmore, Saskatchewan. He joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment of the Canadian Army in February 1940 and trained in Canada and England. In August 1942, he was seriously wounded at Dieppe, France, and was taken POW by the Germans. After recovering in a German field hospital, he worked in a salt mine until he and hundreds of POWs were marched into Germany in April 1945. He was later rescued by the Allies when Germany surrendered. He returned home to Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, in June 1945, married, and raised two daughters. He became a schoolteacher and was Superintendent of schools for Indian Affairs. George passed away on December 13, 1963. He was a member of the Beechy Branch #324 of The Royal Canadian Legion. GALVIN, Arthur L. WWII Arthur was born in Berwick, Saskatchewan, in 1914. He joined the RCADC as a Dental Technician in 1942 and served in England. He was discharged in 1945 and worked for CPR in Churchbridge, and later moved to Arden, Manitoba, with his wife, Dollie, and their four children. He farmed there until retiring to Neepawa, Manitoba, and passed away there from a heart attack in 1998. GALLANT, Anthony Joseph Emil WWII Anthony was born in Kennedy, Saskatchewan, in 1911. He worked on several farms before joining the South Saskatchewan Regiment in 1939, and after taking his basic training, he was shipped overseas. Anthony was killed while taking part in the Dieppe raid on August 19, 1942, at age 31. He has no known grave but his name is inscribed on the Brookwood Memorial in Surrey, England. Gallant Bay in Northern Saskatchewan has been named in his honour.
