The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 117 DAVIES, Steve WWII Steve was born in Liverpool, England, in 1905. He came to Canada when his parents immigrated in 1906 and settled in Southern Saskatchewan. In 1940, he enlisted in the South Saskatchewan Regiment and sailed overseas in 1942, serving in Canada and England and participated in the Dieppe Raid, where Steve was wounded but miraculously made it back to England and returned to Canada in 1945. He became a training instructor until the war ended. Steve was a member of the Assiniboia, Maple Creek and Swift Current Legion Branches for 34 years before he died from ALS in 1978. DAVIES, Walter “Blink” WWII Walter was born in Coronach, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and attended officer candidate school. Upon graduation, he received his commission and in a short time he was selected as a Canloan Officer and sailed to Britain as a Lieutenant and became a Platoon Commander in the Royal Scots Regiment. In 1944, his regiment was on the offensive in France and he was sent on a patrol so that the battalion could move forward. While observing the new destination, a “buzz bomb” destined for England fell short and landed on the location of Walter’s group killing everyone except him. With a shattered leg, he managed to drive a Jeep back to his battalion. His leg was then amputated above the knee and he was shipped to hospital in England. He sailed back to Canada, settled in Regina with his family and worked until his retirement with the government and did one year stint as president of the War Amps Association of Canada. He is a member of the Regina Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion. DAVIES, William Kenny WWII William was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, in 1924. He joined the Regina Rifles and served a short time in the military training as part of the infantry serving in Canada. He passed away in 1991. DAVIES, William “Billy” WWII William was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, in 1908. He joined the Regina Rifles South Saskatchewan Regiment in 1940 with four of his siblings and was a field gunner with rank of Sergeant. His regiment spent the first months on the coast of England doing their best to convince Hitler and his Luftwaffe that England was well defended. The rest of the war, he spent in Italy and Holland until his discharge in 1946. Billy passed away in 1997.
