The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 65 CARSWELL, James R. WWII James was born in 1918 in Turtleford, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot in 1940 graduating with wings and Commission. He was posted to England and then Africa. During the African Campaign he was mentioned in dispatches picked up by the Canadian Press. In August of 1943 when based in Sicily, he failed to return after a tough combat with the enemy. James was 24 years old. In his honour, the Saskatchewan Government named a beautiful lake in Saskatchewan “Carswell Lake.” CARSWELL, Mildred A. WWII Mildred was born on December 24, 1923 in Turtleford, SK. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in February of 1943 “to free one more airman to remuster for air crew and to help my brother and his friends over in the war zone.” She trained in the accounts section at Trenton, ON, graduating and was posted to Summerside, PEI. She married Roy J. Mills while he was on embarkation leave for Japan and continued working in the accounts section until discharged in September of 1945. With the war over she joined her husband and together they raised a family of seven children. CELS, Peter WWII In 1940 Peter joined the 16/22 Saskatchewan Horse Regiment and served from coast-to-coast in the Army. He was discharged in 1942 due to a motorcycle accident. CAUGHLIN, Gerald Leslie Peacetime Gerald was born on August 20, 1941 in Abernethy, SK. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served for 3 years in St Jeans, QC in Transportation. Gerald passed away on June 1, 1972.
