The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 317 STEFFENSON, Erhardt Peter “Hardy” WWII Hardy was born on June 18, 1917 in Carnduff, SK. He enlisted with the Army in 1941 and received his basic training in Maple Creek. He was a member of Edmonton Fusileers and served at various posts across Canada. He received training as a mechanic and rose to the rank of Sergeant. His last days in the Army were spent in Dundurn, SK, where he taught driver training to University students in Saskatoon. One of his pupils was hockey legend Gordie Howe. He received his discharge in 1945. Hardy passed away on July 26, 2004. STEPHANIUK, William WWII William volunteered for the Canadian Army in August of 1942 and received his basic training in Manitoba. He participated in several hazardous and secret trials at Experimental Station, Suffield in the autumn of 1942. He went overseas in 1943 and served in Canada, Holland, France, England, Sicily, Italy, and Germany. He served with the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards. He was wounded by machine gun fire in January of 1944. He was wounded once again in December of 1944 when their vehicle hit an anti-vehicle mine. He was a member of The RCL Branch #305. William passed away in June of 2000. STERLING, John George WWI John was born in 1891 in Pilot Mound, MB. He enlisted with the Army and served with the Canadian Infantry in Canada and France. John was killed in action in 1918 while serving in France. STEPHENS, Alvin Loyd WWII Alvin was born in 1920 in Balcarres, SK. He enlisted with the Army on January 22, 1942 in Regina. In April of 1943 he was transferred to the 8th RECCE Regiment, 2nd Division to guard the coast at Dover, England. On July 6, 1944 he landed at Gold Beach Normandy where they were assigned to front line infantry for one month. The regiment was at Wilhelmshaven when the war ended. He served in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany until his discharge on January 5, 1946. Alvin is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Balcarres Branch #84.
