The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 311 SMALL, L. J. “Vern” WWII Vern was born in 1919 in Gull Lake, SK. He enlisted with the RCAF as an AFM in 1941, and then he remustered to Aircrew in 1942. He graduated as a Pilot Officer Navigator in 1943. He was posted overseas, then flew 19 ops with 429 Squadron and was posted to 405 the RCAF Pathfinder Force Squadron, flying a further 33 trips, several as Master Bomber, which completed 2 tours with the same crew. Vern joined The RCL Branch #119 in 1947. He has been Zone Commander, Branch President, Treasurer, and Sgt at Arms and Poppy Chairman for 30 years. Vern was awarded a Life Membership. SMITH, William A. WWII William joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He died in a POW camp on November 27, 1944 and is buried at Sai Wan Cemetery, Hong Kong. He was the son of William Rule and Hilda Jane smith. Memorial: Smith Lake southeast of Swan River, Manitoba. SQUIRES, William WWI & WWII William was born in 1893 in Sheffield, England. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in September of 1915 and served with the 179th Battalion, 43rd Cameron Islanders in Canada, England, France, and Germany until his discharge in March of 1919. He was awarded the Victory Medal and General Service Medal. He served with the Veteranʼs Guard of Canada from 1943-45 at German Prison Camps. He was a member of The British Empire Service League for 70 years. William passed away in 1993. SPEECHLY, John Montgomery Boer War John was born in 1870 in Ipswich, England. He served with the Army in South Africa during the war and spent 5 years serving in Africa. John passed away in 1953.
