The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 305 SHIRLEY, Clifford “Cliff” WWII Clifford was the eldest son of Carl and Mary Shirley of Carlyle, Sask. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and trained at Mossbank as a flight navigator. After being shipped overseas, he became a navigator bomb aimer in four-engine aircraft (Lancaster and Manchester) with the 50 Squadron RAF. Cliffʼs crew completed many successful bombing raids over Germany and Italy. After completing the required 52 missions, he returned to Canada in the Fall of 1943 and served as a flying instructor in the British Commonwealth Air Training Program at Boundary Bay, BC until the war ended. SHORTT, Thelma WWII Thelma served with the R.C.A.F. (W.D.) from February 1943 until January 1946. She was trained as an Equipment Assistant, with duties of storekeeping and accounting. Her service was primarily in Western Air Command, where many stations were set up to train squadrons of Canadian, British, Australian and New Zealand airmen in flying skills. By 1944 they even had some free French airmen go in for training. After V.E. Day in May 1945 she signed papers indicating that she was willing to continue service as the battle shifted to the Pacific. SIKORA, Wilf Peacekeeping Wilf was born on April 22, 1931 in Esterhazy, SK. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954 and served for 42 years. He was honourably discharged on June 5, 1996. SIEGEL, Edward August WWII Edward was born in 1911 in Lanigan, SK. He enlisted with the Army and served with the Regina Rifles Regiment. He saw his first action on D-Day and traveled all the way from D-Day to Germany. He then had extra duty in Germany after the war. He came home to Lanigan in March of 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Lanigan Branch #143 for 55 years. Edward passed away in 2000.
