The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 303 SHAW, Thelma Grace WWII Thelma was born in 1921 in Tate, SK. She enlisted with the C.W.A.C. and served a total of 21 months as a Store woman at 10th Area Signals, in Vancouver, BC. She received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal. She was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Pierceland Branch #178. Thelma passed away in 1963. SHERMAN, Fred Albert WWII Fred was born in 1920 in Vanguard, SK. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and served in Canada, the UK and Continental Europe. He received the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, and the Defense Medal. In November of 1947 he joined The Royal Canadian Legion in Orillia, ON. He moved to Neville and was President of the Legion. On December 4, 1969 Fred transferred to SK Legion #56. SHIRLEY, Cecil WWII Cecilʼs father had emigrated from Watford, Ontario, and purchased land north of Carlyle in 1908. In 1910, he married Mary Saunders of Morden, Manitoba. Cecil attended Swift Creek school. When the Second World War broke out, he enlisted in the Postal Corp. of the Canadian Army in 1942. He was stationed in Ottawa and London, Ontario. Cecil was discharged in 1945. After being discharged, he returned to Carlyle where he married Billie Johnstone of Wordsworth. They farmed in the north Carlyle area and raised three boys and two girls. SHILLING, Glenn Arthur WWII Glenn was born on January 12, 1907 in Knoxville, Iowa. He moved with his family to the Regina, SK area in 1919 and in 1927 the family moved to the Birch Hills area to farm. He was called into the Canadian Army and served from June 1943 until February 1946 in Canada, England, France, Belgium, and Germany. After the war he bought land in the Fisher District. In 1980 he sold his farm and bought a farm in the Winston District. Glenn passed away on February 1, 1992 and is buried in the Birch Hills Cemetery.
