The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 259 PETERSON, Alvin R. WWII Alvin was born on March 25, 1923 in Tompkins, SK. He enlisted with the Army in 1943 in Regina. He was sent off to England in January of 1944. On June 6, 1944, D-Day, he was part of first line reinforcements to land on the Juno Beach in Normandy, France. As a signaler on a motorcycle, many times he had to jump off the still running bike to take cover from the enemy as they flew over him shooting. After fighting their way through France, it was onto Belgium, Holland, and then Germany. Alvin has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tompkins Branch for over 25 years. PHENIX, Gerald Donaldson “Gerry” WWII Gerry joined the Royal Canadian Navy on September 12, 1940. He served on five different ships that did ocean escort from St. Johnʼs, NL to Londonderry, Ireland. He was later drafted to HMCS Dawson, where he was drafted to the American Fleet in the Behring Sea. PICKERING, George Douglas WWII George was born in 1916 near Leslie, SK. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 120th C.A.B.T.C. in Canada and England. He drove tanks and was discharged with the Rank of Trooper. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Leslie Branch #172 for 30 years. George passed away in 1978. PHENIX, Tom S. WWII After graduating from Carlyle High School, Tom joined the RCAF. He was sent to London, ON, where he took Squadron Leadership Training. He was stationed in Dauphin, MN, for four years and was then sent to York, England. From there, he served in London, England, Belgium and Germany. After the war, he returned to Carlyle. He went to Saskatoon and joined the 406th Squadron and spent 23 years with the Air Force Reserve. During that time he attended University and received his BA, BSA and his MSC. He then worked with the Department of Agriculture, Canada.
