The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 179 KOPPERUD (BURNSIDES), Irene WWII Irene was born on December 21, 1922 in Greencourt, AB. She enlisted with the Canadian Army in Calgary in August of 1943. She took her basic training in Vermillion, AB and was then placed in Suffield, AB in November of 1943. She first served as a waitress and then as a telephone operator. She was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and was discharged in April of 1945. Irene passed away on August 17, 1996. KOPPERUD, Walter I. WWII Walter was born on January 5, 1920 in Lanigan, SK. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in Regina in July of 1941. He took his basic training in Regina and then took his advanced training in Calgary. He was then placed in Suffield, AB as a Driver for the experimental station. Walter served until his discharge in March of 1946. KRUK, Joe WWII Joe joined the Armed forces during the Second World War in 1942 in Regina. While in the Army, was trained as a tailor. He later transferred to Vancouver. KOTSCHOREK, Robert Gustov Bernard WWII Robert was born February 8, 1920 in the Prairie Rose district of SK. He enlisted with the Army on January 18, 1940.He served with the Princess Patriciaʼs Canadian Light Infantry in Canada and the Central Mediterranean area. He was wounded in action on March 29, 1944 in Italy. Robert died on April 1, 1944 as a result of his wounds. He received the following Awards: Star. Italy Star, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal I (1939-45). In recognition the Province of Saskatchewan named Kotchorek Lake to honour A/L/Cpl. Robert Kotschorek.
