The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 141 HAVERSTOCK, Leslie K. “Les” Peacetime Les was born on January 27, 1954 in Halifax, NS. He enlisted on May 10, 1977 in the regular force as an electrician. He served all over Canada and in Haiti, Cyprus, Bosnia and CFS Alert for Special Duty. Les joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1992 at St. James Branch in Winnipeg, MB and then transferred to Gibbons, AB, then to Hanley, SK and in December of 2007 he transferred to Whitewood, SK where he currently resides. While he was a member of the Hanley Branch he served as Sergeant at Arms, 1st Vice and President. HARVEY, Bruce WWII Bruce was born on Sept. 22, 1924 to Jim Sr. and Margaret (Smith) Harvey, who lived north of Carlyle, SK. After finishing school, he joined the Canadian Army. After being discharged, Bruce married Pat Benders of Arcola and they farmed north of Carlyle. After a few years of farming, Bruce took the position of manager of Carlyle Lake Resort. From this position they moved to Whitehorse where Bruce was employed as superintendent of Parks and Historic Sites for the Yukon. After his untimely death in 1982, many tributes were given for his work including the naming of a mountain in his honour. “Mount Harvey” is situated near the Chilcoot Pass. Bruce and Pat raised two children, Jean and Rob. HAWRYLUK, William WWII William was born on April 10, 1918. He enrolled with the Army on August 29, 1941 at the age of 23. He served with the Rocky Mountain Rangers and the Oxford Rifles Regiments in United Kingdom, North pacific area, and Continental Europe. He was discharged on March 9, 1946 at age 27. He was awarded the France and Germany Star. William passed away on June 5, 1983 at the age of 65. HARVEY, James McLean “Mac” WWII Mac was born on July 22,1922 at “Smithfield,” his grandfatherʼs farm north of Carlyle, SK. He attended Glen Morris school and when Mac was seven years old, the family moved to West Carlyle, where he attended Carlyle High School. In June 1942, Mac joined the RCAF serving as a Bomb and Gun Armourer in England. He was discharged in 1945. Mac obtained his farm through the Veteransʼ Land Lease Agreement. In 1950, Mac married Isabel Thornton and they raised three children. Both Mac and Isabel were active members of their community. Mac always enjoyed sports - particularly baseball and curling whenever work permitted.
