Commemorative History Book

The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command Commemorative History Booklet 290 0n the anniversary of the storming of Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917, a "Vimy Night" was held in Cabri. C.W. Haydon, H. Rimmer and T. Fjeldal received 25-year membership pins for "Active Service" in Peace, and since then, members have received 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55-year pins. The Legion's prime aim is to ensure that proper attention be paid to the welfare of all who have served in the forces and for their dependents. The Cabri Branch did not solely confine their activities to Veterans’ affairs. The Branch has been active in promoting sports, locally and provincially. Associated with the Annual Remembrance Day functions, the Legion promotes school essays and poem contests relevant to that day. In 1955, a Ladies Auxiliary Branch was formed and this Branch was a great asset to Legion activities. Also that year, the Legion spearheaded a campaign to build a new Legion Hall. This Hall is still in use and is owned by the Legion, but is operated by a Hall Board. Because most Veterans are over age 65, the Branch has not been as active as in years past. The requirements for membership has now been opened to sons and daughters of Veterans, to non-voting Associate and Honorary members. In 2006, the membership is 22; ten of who were in the Active Services and two were in the Reserves. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month, excluding July and August. Through the years, Legion members have been very active in district, zone and provincial curling, golf, and other activities. From the rebirth of the Cabri Branch #347 in 1948, the following Presidents have occupied the presidential chair: Sigurd Sorenson, 1948-1949; Charlie Duthie, 1950-1951; T.W.
