85 www.rnca.ca Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association 2018 Peace Officer of the Year Superintendent Barry White is with Enforcement Services, Department of Fisheries and Land Resources, Eastern Region. Superintendent White is seen to be one of the best spokesperson and promoters of Enforcement and Resource Services Branch, Department of Fisheries and Land Resources. Everywhere he goes he wears his uniform with pride. He is an active and enthusiastic member of several committees, including: Police/Peace Officers Memorial, Torch Run, Uniformed Services Committee, as well as a parent volunteer. His nomination noted the following: • In April of 2017, Superintendent Barry White participated in a Duke of Edinburgh event of a 5-day, 4-night journey at Lamanche Park with 14 teenagers. He worked over a three month period planning and organizing this activity. The teens were taught to snare rabbits, catch fish, clean and cook them. The group was so impressed that one of their number is looking into becoming a Wildlife Officer when he graduates and all 14 of the group achieved their Duke of Edinburgh awards. • Superintendent White is a tireless supporter and member of the Uniformed Services Committee which organizes a Uniformed Services Gala that creates to bring both serving and retired members of all uniformed services together, in a relaxed and cordial dinner/dance environment. • He is also a past organizer of the Police/Peace Officers Memorial Parade. Newfoundland and Labrador has its own organization dedicated to honour the memory of police and peace officers who have died in the line of duty. • Superintendent White sits on a number of volunteer committees in addition to being a Wildlife Enforcement Officer and a father. He is a Volunteer Parent with the Paradise Grasshoppers, a group of children age 6 - 12 years of age who are tackling the problem of litter in their community. They also create green spaces, and help other organizations such as the local food bank, seniors’ homes, and plant community gardens. • He is a Divisional Representative on the Gender Equity Committee - Department of Justice and Public Safety 2015 Human Rights - The Gender Equity Committee is dedicated to the improving the recruitment, retention, and promotion of women in the field of law enforcement throughout this province. The committee has representation from five law enforcement agencies under the Department of Justice and Public Safety banner (Fish and Wildlife Enforcement, Her Majesty's Penitentiary, Office of the High Sheriff, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary). • He was former Secretary with the Newfoundland and Labrador Police and Peace Officers Memorial Association for 4 years (2013 – September 2017) Civil Rights and Social Action.
