Dwight Feltham, Northeast Avalon Region, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary 2017 Police Officer of the Year, Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Cpl. Dwight Feltham has been a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer for 28 years. During that time, he has worked in a variety of positions providing protection and support to the general public, patrol, VIP security, Use of Force instruction and street crime. In his current position of Police Studies Program Coordinator, Sgt. Feltham is a positive role model for working with cadets who have chosen a career in policing. He works diligently with the RNC cadets to instill the values, skills, knowledge and work ethic required to conduct the duties of a police officer. In the course of his duties with the cadets, Sgt. Feltham models the importance of respect, listening, fairness and firmness. Sgt. Feltham takes a personal interest in the success of each cadet and provides supports that assists the cadet be as successful as possible in the program. Sgt. Feltham also coordinates the volunteer activities of the RNC cadets. These activities are varied and include race marshalling, supporting health care fund raisers, and handing out warm clothing to people on the street and in shelters and the cadets also fund raise to make donations to community groups in need. In addition to his own volunteer activities, Sgt. Feltham encourages the RNC cadets to give back to the community. In addition to his duties with the cadets, Sgt. Fetham continues to demonstrate is willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. He currently has four secondary duties, including the serving a leadership capacity on the Tactics and Rescue Unit, the LGBTQ Committee, as well as being a police sniper. He is a former member of the Honour Guard for 13 years, Use of Force Board and the Public Order Unit. He currently holds 12 certifications for instructing other officers in various skills necessary for their jobs. In addition to his work with the RNC, Sgt. Feltham has made a significant contribution to the larger community. Since 2015, he has been the assistant coach for the RNC Female Volleyball Team, who are competing this year in Los Angeles for the 2017 games. He has been an active volunteer with the Mount Pearl show choir, acting as a chaperon for the tours to Japan and Europe and assisting with the creation of stage props, providing event security and fundraising. He worked as a parent volunteer since 2011 for Mount Pearl Girls Volleyball and has organized tournaments and fundraising. Sgt. Feltham has voluntarily provided traffic control at Elizabeth Park Elementary school (the “Kiss and Ride Program”) to ensure the safe drop off of school children during the morning rush hour. Since 2009, Sgt. Feltham has been an active volunteer at the Salvation Army Christmas Distribution days. Sgt. Feltham conducts this work with respect and humility. Sgt. Feltham has also been a member of the eastern School District Safe Schools Committee and served as treasurer of the Ducks Unlimited. Sgt. Feltham has described himself as “a simple guy just doing his job.” By his peers, Sgt. Feltham is described as being principled and guided by the values of integrity, respect, dignity and fairness. He is and has been a proud contributing member of the RNC. He has approached his duties diligently, earnestly, and always with the intent of performing to the best of his ability. He has been a team player who has supported his colleagues in doing their work and maximizing their potential. In the words of The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Cadet Class of 2017 “Sgt.
