34th Annual Crime Prevention Guide

13 TEENAGERS DRUG ABUSE AWARENESS MESSAGE FROM THE SUMMERSIDE CHIEF OF POLICE Chief Sinclair Walker Summerside Police Services On behalt of the Summerside Police Services, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Prince Edward Island Police Association on the publication of their 34th Crime Prevention Guide. This year’s guide focuses on “Drug Abuse Among Teens” which is a pressing issue that raises concerns among parents, educators and health professionals alike. During adolescence, the human brain is still in the crucial stage of development, making it particularly vulnerable to harmful effects of drug use. The long-term consequences of teen drug use during these maturing years can have severe impacts on various aspects of a teenager’s life. These effects include deteriorating mental health, impaired cognitive functions such as memory deficits and even disruptions in normal growth and delayed puberty. These side effects cause difficulty making friends or feeling accepted at school. As a parent who notices these changes in their teen’s behavior or has seen signs of drug use, it is crucial to understand the risk factors. It is crucial to communicate with your teen and seek professional guidance. I would like to commend the Prince Edward Island Police Association for their support to youth through sports and other teen initiatives. These programs are so important in the development of our youth. In closing, on behalf of the Summerside Police Services I wish you every success in this year’s guide. I would like to thank the members of the PEIPA for the great work they do in our communities on PEI. Respectfully ,
