VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 18 / 109 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND WORTH, Harvey Hammond PEACETIME Harvey was born in 1939 in Charlottetown and grew up in Albany. He served two years in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1954 to 1956. Harvey did his basic training at HMCS Cornwallis and served on HMCS Quebec. He operated Mt Wheating in Ottawa for fifteen years before returning to PEI in 1980. He volunteered at Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. Harvey was married to Norma Larocque for 46 years and the father of two daughters. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Borden-Carleton Branch 10. Harvey passed away in 2012 and is buried in Wilmot Valley Cemetery. WOOD, John Lyman “Ly” WWI John was born in North Tryon, PEI in 1897. He was a secondyear engineering student at Acadia University before enlisting during World War I. John arrived in France from England on December 22, 1916, as part of the Second Infantry Battalion, which was part of the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He survived Vimy Ridge, but lost his life on May 3, 1917, during the Battle of Arras, in the third battle of the Scarpe near Fresnoy. A signaller, he was killed while repairing telephone communications during the pre-dawn attack. His body was never recovered, and his name is engraved on the Vimy Memorial in France. WILLIAMS, William “Leonard” WWII William was born in Bloomfield District, the son of Hugh and Caroline (Matthews) Williams. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 6, 1941 and was discharged on July 6, 1945. He served as a Leading Aircraftsman in Canada.
