VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 17 / 95 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND YEO, Horace Willard WWI Horace was born in Northam, Prince Edward Island on January 12, 1897 to John E. and Mary Jane McKay Yeo. When Horace turned eighteen, he volunteered for the Canadian Infantry on May 1, 1915. Following his military training, he was then transferred to the 60th Battalion Canadian Infantry with the Quebec Regiment. He travelled to France by way of England. He found himself on the battlefield in Pas-de-Calais where on September 20, he would be fatally wounded, at the young age of nineteen. His grave is in Vimy. YEO, George Elmer WWI George was born in Kingston, Prince Edward Island on April 24, 1893. As a young man he went to Vernon, British Columbia to work on a farm prior to the start of World War I. Following the start of World War I, George volunteered for service in the Canadian Army where he would join the 47th Battalion of the Canadian Machine Gun Corp. Following training in Canada, he was shipped overseas to England and again more training then onward to France for combat. In 1917, George and the troops camped among the sand dunes of Etaples. Immense concentrations of Commonwealth reinforcement camps and hospitals were in this area. The battlefields were to the north and south of Etaples. George died in action on November 20, 1917 at the age of 24. George is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France. He is also commemorated on page 354 of the First World War Book of Remembrance located in the Peace Tower in Ottawa. WHYTE, Kelso Stewart WWII Kelso was born in Lanark County, Ontario in 1926. He served in the Merchant Navy and in the Air Force with Summerside 419. Kelso served in Summerside, England, France, Winnipeg, Renfrew, and St. Bruno. He was the RCAF Association President in Charlottetown as well as a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Charlottetown Branch 1 for 22 years, President Corporal Branch France and the MWO on retirement. Kelso passed away in 1996.
