VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 17 / 89 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND SHERREN, Arthur William WWII Arthur was born in 1914 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Morson Sherren and Elizabeth MacLean. In 1939, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in World War II on HMCS Iroquois in the Murmansk Run. Arthur received several medals during his time of service, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star with Atlantic Clasp, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and War Medal 1939-1945. After the war, he returned to Charlottetown to work at the local newspaper and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Charlottetown Branch 1. Arthur passed away in 1971. ROWELL, John Oliver WWI & WWII John was born on January 21, 1892 to Thomas and Jane Rowell, who came from England and were told how beautiful Prince Edward Island was to live. John enlisted for World War I on September 2, 1914. He served in East Surrey Regiment, France, Egypt, and Salonika. He was discharged from the British Army in 1919 and the Canadian Army in 1920. On September 10, 1940, he reenlisted for World War II. His unit was the Veterans Guard of Canada. John made three trips overseas with prisoners of war. He was discharged on November 3, 1947. After leaving the army, John took up farming to make a living. He married Eleanor and they had two boys. Although John grew up in Bangor, Prince Edward Island, after both wars were over, he and his wife eventually moved right into the village of Morell. ROBERTS, James B. WWI James was born in Winsloe South, Prince Edward Island on May 11, 1890. He was the son of Richard Roberts. Before enlisting in the war, James was a fisherman. He enlisted in the Army on December 15, 1915 at the age of 25 during World War I and served with the 105th Overseas Battalion CEF and the 82nd Regiment. James passed away on September 22, 1948.
