VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 17 / 83 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND PEGAHMAGABOW, Francis WWI Francis is one of the most highly decorated Indigenous people in Canada in World War I. He was part of the 23rd Regiment Northern Pioneers and was one of the first Indigenous people to join the fight over seas. He fought at a second battle of Ypres (first time Germans vs chlorine gas in WWI). One of the finest sniper aces of World War I, he was credited with 378 kills from behind the front lines. He ventured into no man’s land to wait for the enemy. Francis captured around 300 prisoners and fought at the Battle of Mount Sorrel, Battle of the Somme, and Battle of Passchendaele. He suffered a gun shot wound to the leg in 1916 and returned to the battlefield. He received his first Military Medal in 1916 for his heroic actions, won a bar to his medal for his efforts in Passchendaele. In 1917, Francis developed pneumonia and because of gas attacks he suffered from chest pains for the rest of his life, passing away on August 5, 1962. PALMER, George F. PEACETIME George was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island in 1943. He served from 1965 to 1985 in the Canadian Regular Forces. George married Patricia Taylor. He was awarded the Canadian Forces’ Decoration. George is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Borden-Carleton Branch 10 since 2005. O’HALLORAN, William “Leslie” KOREA William was born in Bloomfield District, son of William and Ellen (Griffin) O’Halloran. He enlisted in the Army on March 23, 1954 and was discharged on March 23, 1955. He served as a Private in the Service Corps in Korea.
