Military Service Recognition Book – Volume 15 / 69 The Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Island Command SUTHERLAND, Pius J. WWII Pius was born in Goose River, PEI on August 29, 1911. He enlisted in the Navy and served on various ships during World War II including Prince David, Chambly and Toronto. He served in England, Scotland and Ireland (based in Londonderry), Italy, Greece, Bermuda, the West Indies and Pacific Gibraltar. Pius received four medals for his war efforts; unfortunately the medals have been lost. He was a member of the Legion Branch Morell, PEI. Pius passed away on October 10, 1999. SUTHERLAND, John “Jack” WWII Jack was born on March 27, 1917 in Goose River, PEI. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II serving on HMCS Labrador as well as various ships and aircraft carriers. He served in Canada, England, Asia, West Indies and Greece. CPO John Sutherland was on the HMCS Labrador when it made history as the first warship to circumnavigate North America through the Northwest Passage. He received various medals for his war effort. He was a member of the Morell Legion. Jack passed away on August 20, 1977. SUTHERLAND, John “Cyril” WWII John was born on February 22, 1907 in Goose River, PEI. He enlisted in the Air Force with the Dakota Squadron KG653. He served in Canada and England during World War II. LAC John Sutherland was shot down over Germany en route to India on September 24, 1944. He was commended for volunteering to replace a young married man with family to go on this mission being awarded the 1939-1945 Star.
