Lest We Forget / 1 On behalf of the Government of Prince Edward Island, it is my pleasure to extend congratulations and best wishes to The Royal Canadian Legion on the occasion of the publication of the fourteenth edition of the Military Service Recognition Booklet. Islanders have had a long and proud tradition of responding to the call of duty both in times of peace and in conflict. This annual publication recognizes the importance of paying tribute to those who responded to our country’s needs, ordinary citizens who have made and continue to make extraordinary sacrifices to safeguard our peace. Let us continue to honour the memory of those who have gone before us and support those who continue to ensure the freedom we enjoy today.

He served in the Army during World War II with the Cape Breton Highlanders, RCIC as Lieutenant. He was killed in Italy on March 13, 1944 at 29 years of age. EVANS, Joseph WWII Joseph was a farm boy from Tracadie Cross. At age 25, he joined the conflict in World War II. After his basic training in Canada, he was shipped overseas and saw action in Europe. His assignment as a truck driver often put him in a position where he was a highly visible target, having no place to hide. After some German successes in the early part of the war, the tide had clearly turned in favour of the Allies by 1944. Joseph was in Germany when the war ended, so the mood he faced was somewhat subdued. However, that was not the case back in his native province when V-E Day was declared on May 8, 1945. After the war, Joseph decided against a return to farm, deciding instead to pursue a career in the business world. He has been a resident at Whisperwood Villa for over eleven years. DUNNING, Joseph E. “Joe” WWII Joe was born on April 25, 1927 at Long River. He moved to Charlottetown at an early age with his family. He enlisted in the Canadian Army at the young age of sixteen. He remained with the government until his retirement in July 1987. In June 1985, Joe married Helen Magennis-Doyle. They moved to their new home on the Mason Road in May 1990 where Joe enjoyed the community of Bunbury and his neighbours. Helen and Joe have three children: Linda, Gary and Wayne.
