Lest We Forget / 3 The Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Island Command This year on the 8th May, 2015 marked the 70th anniversary of the formal acceptance by Allies of the World War 11 of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its Armed Forces. This was declared a public holiday and has come to be known as V-E Day. 2015 is the 200th Anniversary of the end of the War of 1812 which ended on the 24th December, 1814 with the Treaty of Ghent. However this news did not reach North America until February 1815, thus 200 years ago. We must not forget those that suffered and are still suffering from the effect of the atomic bombing of Japan in 1945, which ended the war in the South Pacific. On the 11th September, 1995 HMCS Charlottetown (CPF) was commissioned here in the Charlottetown Harbour. This date was to honour the torpedo attack of the first HMCS Charlottetown by a German U boat in the Gulf of St Lawrence. It is now four years since Canadian Military departed the War in Afghanistan. Let’s remember the many military personnel that returned and may we never forget those that did not return from all of Canada’s conflicts, whether in Peacekeeping, UN, NATO, NORAD or of any and all deployments whether at sea, land or in the air. The Prince Edward Island Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and its Executive Council wish to convey their appreciation to the members, staff and the Ladies Auxiliary of The Legion. We at Command wish to extend our thanks to all who provided pictures and information and those who provided assistance for information on our Veterans. It is through the strong efforts of this booklet and our organization that we will continue our strong community support to develop and fund programs for our Veterans, seniors and our youth. “We will remember them.” - « Nous nous souviendrons d’eux. » John Yeo Provincial President Prince Edward Island Command The Royal Canadian Legion Message from the President
