Lest We Forget / 49 MacLAREN, Rod P. “Roddie” WWII Roddie was born and raised in Goose River. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served in Canada. For his contribution to the services, he received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal. He returned to Goose River in the Spring of 1946 and went fishing that season. In the Fall of 1946, he re-entered the services and was sent overseas. Roddie served one year in England, three years at Baden-Baden, Germany, and two years at Zweibrucken, Germany. He served in Ottawa and in St. Hubert, Quebec, also in France, Italy, and Africa. He retired from the services in 1968 and is now living in Souris. He also received the Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp and the Canadian Centennial Medal. MacKINNON, William Louis “Billy” WWII Billy was born in St. Peterʼs Bay, PEI, on September 20, 1920. He enlisted with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders on September 4, 1939, serving in Canada, England, Europe. Billy was killed in action on D-Day, June 6, 1944. MacLAREN, John Archibald WWII John was born and raised in Goose River. He enlisted with the Cape Breton Highlanders and was sent overseas to England, Italy and Holland. He was killed in action in Holland in May 1945. John received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star, the FranceGermany Star and the 1939-45 War Medal. The medals today are in the possession of his mother, Ida MacLaren. John is buried in Holten Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands in Plot X, Row G., Grave 12. MacLAREN, Stewart Roy WWI & WWII Stewart was born in Forest Hill, PEI, on May 22, 1897, and enlisted in the 105th Regiment, 26th Battery, CEF on November 7, 1915, and served overseas. He was discharged on January 10, 1919. He re-enlisted with the PEI Highlanders on July 10, 1940, serving in the North Atlantic, Newfoundland and Northern Ontario. He was discharged on May 31, 1946. He passed away on July 1, 1975. MacLAREN, W. Frank WWI Frank was born in Cable Head, PEI, on January 19, 1894, and enlisted with the 105th Battalion, CEF, 2nd Siege Battery in 1917 and served overseas.
