Lest We Forget / 63 STIRLING, Alex Reid WWII Killed in Action Alex was born in Rollo Bay, PEI on October 13, 1917. He enl isted in September 1942 and was posted to Brockvi lle, Ontario and commissioned in 1943. In March 1944, he went overseas to England on the “Canloan” program with the British Infantry Army Division and was part of the invasion on June 6, 1944, with the East Yorkshire Regiment. Alex was ki l led in action in The battle for Caen on June 28, 1944. He was commended in action for his gallant leadership in battle. A cross is erected in him in the Memorial Field in Hermanvi lle. STENBERG, Lois Olive WWII Lois was born at Freeland on November 30, 1904, to Ernest and Eva Hardy. In December 1944, she enl isted in the U.S.A.F. in New York City and served as a Registered Nurse at Patterson Field, Ohio in Macon, Georgia near Camp Wheeler, and on the General Staff of the Army Forces Regional Hospital at Robins Field, Georgia, headquarters of the Warner Robins Air Technical Services Command. Lois worked in psychiatry, providing rehabilitation for returned soldiers who had suffered from “shel l-shock” on the firing l ine. She received her discharge in the autumn of 1945. Lois is buried in Freeland Presbyterian Cemetery, lot 11. STENBERG, William Oakee WWII Wi ll iam was born on January 2, 1908 and enl isted in September 1931 with the United States Army Air Force serving in the Phil ippine Islands with the 28th Bombardment Squadron unti l his discharge in 1934. In 1942, he enlisted again in the U.S.A.A.F. and served with the Mi l itary Pol ice at Robin s Field, Georgia unti l the autumn of 1945. Bi l l is buried in the Freeland Presbyterian Cemetery, lot 11. THOMPSON, John Cecil “Jack” NATO FORCES John was born on July 16, 1929 in Conway, PEI and enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in Summerside on Apri l 16, 1951. He served with NATO Forces, 4th Canadian Fighter Wing from 1953-1955. John also served in Manitoba and Ontario with the Marine section search and rescue operations. He was discharged in 1960. THOMPSON, John J. “Johnnie” WWII Johnnie was born on Cardigan Road, PEI on April 8, 1924. He enlisted as a Rifleman, then to Staff Sergeant with the Royal Regina Rifle Regiment, 3rd Division in September 1943. Johnnie fought in England, France, Belgium, Hol land and Germany.
