95 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CHALMERS, John Kay John was born on June 24, 1896, in Mornington Township, Perth County to John Adam and Margaret (Burnett) Chalmers, along with seven siblings: Adam, Andrew, Alice, Anne, Jessie, Jean, and William. He enlisted on February 23, 1916 in Burks Falls and posted with the 162nd O.S. Battalion. After nine months of basic training, he was on his way to England and arrived in Liverpool on November 11, 1916. On December 5, 1916 he was transferred to the 35th Battalion in W. Sanding. Ten days later, he was given notice of being sent to France with the 75th Battalion and given further training. On March 4, 1917, John was in the battle in Lens, and was seriously injured and died of his wounds on August 15, 1917, and is buried in the Lievin Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas-de-Calais in France. John is commemorated on page 2014 of the First World War book of remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, Ottawa. CHAUVETTE, Joseph Gilbert Simon Simon was born in Nicolet, Québec, on February 21, 1959. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces on March 29, 1976, as anArmy Vehicle Technician. Following basic training in Saint-Jean, Québec, and occupation training at CFB Borden, Ontario, Private Chauvette was posted to 5 Service Battalion based at CFB Valcartier, Québec where he served from 1977 to 1981. He then moved to Lahr, Germany with the 1st Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment, for a four-year tour under NATO. Back to Canada in 1985, he served with the Service Commando, part of the Canadian Airborne Regiment based at CFB Petawawa, Ontario. His last Regular Forces posting was at the Canadian Forces School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CFSEME) based at CFB Borden, where he worked as an instructor from 1988 to 1994. Retiring from the forces on July 15, 1994, Simon returned to CFSEME in 2002 as a civilian instructor until his final retirement in 2021. Simon moved to Victoria Harbour, Ontario in 2019 where he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Victoria Harbour Branch 523 in December 2023. CHATER, Walter Beresford Walter was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1912. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and served with the Royal Canadian Artillery, 4th Field Regiment as a gunner during World War II. Walter was killed in action in France on July 18, 1944. He is remembered on page 272 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance and is buried in Bény-sur-Mer, France.
