89 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CARDIFF, William Ernest “Ernie” Ernie was born in Morris Township, Huron County, Ontario on August 15, 1896. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in London, Ontario on May 16, 1915 with the 1st Depot BattalionW.O.R. He sailed to England on the SS Pannoniain August 1918 and joined the 4th Reserve Battalion. He was stationed in England until his discharge on July 16, 1919. He returned to Morris Township, and in 1923 married his wife Annie. He worked alongside his father in the farm ditching business for many years until he ventured out on his own with a Massey Harris Implement Shop in the town of Brussels. In later years, the couple moved to Atwood where he worked as a mechanic. They lost their only son in infancy. Ernie passed away on December 15, 1951 and is buried in Brussels Cemetery. CARMAN, Craig Theodore Craig was born in Bowmanville on April 26, 1958. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in April 1979 and served with 1&2 Service Bttn, 2 RCHA, Baden/Solingen, 1&3 RCR and CFS Inuvik at the rank of Warrant Officer. He served in Croatia, Kosovo and Germany and was discharged in August 2000. He received the CD 2, NATO, Peacekeeper, Croatia, Kosovo. After his discharge, Craig worked for GM Defence in London, Ontario for eighteen years where he helped to build tanks. Craig is married and resides in Sheddon, Ontario. CARLEY, Douglas Wesley Douglas was born in Concecon, Ontario on August 19, 1930. He joined the service at the age of nineteen. His unit, the 2nd RCR Canadian Army Special Force, was deployed to Korea for twelve months of hell, as Douglas put it. While serving in Korea as the infantry signalman, he was wounded and almost killed. His radio antenna was shot off his head, while another bullet went through his beret. Douglas received the Gallantry Award for his service in Korea. Douglas also served in Europe during the Cold War and also did duty in Cyprus. After 25 years in the service, he retired. Douglas is a fifty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110 and currently lives in Trenton, Ontario.
