87 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAPLING, Milton Milton was born on January 24, 1894, in Tavistock, Ontario, to HenryWilliam and Elizabeth (Mogk) Capling along with five siblings, William, Clayton, Gordon, Catherine and Florence. Prior to World War I, he was working in a machine shop when, on April 18, 1916, he up and enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 118th Battalion in Berlin (Kitchener). After extensive training, the unit was sent to Halifax where, on February 6, 1917, they boarded the SS Scandinavian and were on the way to England. He was transferred to the 25th Reserve Battalion, promoted to L/Cpl, and sent to the front lines on July 28, 1917. Milton was badly injured from an exploding bomb and died of his injuries on August 1, 1917. He is buried in Chocques Military Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France. Milton Capling is commemorated on page 213 of the First World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, Ottawa. His service is remembered by his greatniece Tori. CARDER, Russell Ellis “Buck” Buck was born in Leamington, Ontario on September 6, 1925, the youngest of five children. Enlisting on September 2, 1943, Russel joined the Royal Canadian Navy (Regular Force) and served as an Able Seaman on several different Corvette Class vessels in the North Atlantic. He served on HMCS Hunter, HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Kenogami, and HMCS Stadacona on the High Seas and in Halifax, Nova Scotia during World War II. Russell was discharged on December 18, 1945 with the 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Returning to Leamington, he married Jean Snyder on August 19, 1951, fathered two sons and spent his working life with A+P (Metro) as a Store Manager in Windsor and Amherstburg. Russell was Past President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 84 in Leamington from 1956 to 1958, and was an active member of Metropolitan Branch 594 in LaSalle. He had been a member for seventy years. Buck passed away on October 18, 2015. CARD, Lawrence David Laurence was born on October 24, 1919, in Chapleau, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on October 26, 1941 and served with the Canadian Railway Corps in England, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. He was a member of Ontario Command Legion Branch 5 for 50 years. Laurence passed away on November 21, 2002.
