63 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BRENNAN, Eric Eric was born on July 27, 1932, in Manchester, England. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1953 and served in Ismailia, Egypt and Cyprus. He was discharged in 1955 and awarded the General Service Medal with Clasp, and the National Service Medal. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Dr. Fred Starr Branch 76. Eric passed away on June 12, 2012. BRENNAN, Samual Joseph Samual was born on August 1, 1896, in Merritton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on September 17, 1915. He served with the 81st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in England and France during World War I. He was wounded in action on May 9, 1917. Corporal Brennan was discharged on May 24, 1919 and, in his civilian life, worked as a carpenter in the building of the 4th Welland Ship Canal. Samual passed away on January 28, 1935 of wounds suffered during wartime. BRENNAN, James Edward Stewart James was born in 1913, the son of Herman Percy and Mable E. Brennan (Cochrane) in Aylesford, Nova Scotia. Before service, he worked for an apple cannery in Middleton, Nova Scotia. Life from his service was documented in his 65 letters home from July 7, 1939 to August 19, 1943. On July 25, 1940, he was at 43 Marine Technical College in NS to become a Chief ERA, on September 7, 1940 he was patrolling the Bay of Fundy on Active Service, and on December 18, 1940 he was inActive Service, Canadian forces. He was drafted to ships in Halifax, NS and New Brunswick on HMCS Avalon, Cartier, and Prescott prior to final deployment on HMCS St. Croix. James artistically created useful handmade wood items on a lathe, played clarinet in the Navy Parade band. He was married to Florence Kathleen (Hodges) of Kingston, Nova Scotia and they had one son, James Sinclair Brennan. His December 20, 1941 Christmas Letter for his son “Master James Brennan” was recited in the live theatre production “Dear Canada Letters of WWII” NAC Ottawa Remembrance Day 2022. James was killed in action on September 20, 1943 while fighting at the Battle of the Atlantic.
