57 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BOLTER (WOODMAN), Barbara Jean Barbara was born in Fort Smith, NWT, to Archibald Campbell Woodman, a fur trader, and Rita Dixon, a homemaker. Her father was a World War I Fighter Pilot with the Royal Flying Corps and flew with famed Canadian war hero Billy Bishop. Barbara enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) in 1942 with the WRCNC. She was stationed at HMC Stadacona Halifax, as a petty officer with the Wrens during her service years and was discharged in 1945. In civilian life, she was employed at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Windsor, Ontario working in various capacities as a clerk in the admitting department to an aide in the pharmacy department until her early retirement in 1981. She and her husband, Percy Bolter, who was in the RCAF and flew the Harvard, were members of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 for many years. They loved to winter in Florida and always attended the Kentucky Derby. In 2017, at the age of 93, Barbara was presented with a Quilt of Valour as recognition of her service. BOWES, William John William was born in County Cork, Ireland on January 1, 1896. Prior to signing up in St. Thomas, William had previously served for four years with the 25th Regiment in St. Thomas. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 15, 1915 and served with the 91st Battalion CEF and 2nd Battalion CEF. He sailed from Halifax on June 29, 1916, arriving in Liverpool on July 5, 1916. He was then shipped to the front lines in France where he spent eight months in the trenches. On May 2, 1917, fighting near Frasne, France, Private William Bowes was severely injured when a German hand grenade exploded nearby, resulting in him losing his left eye. After rehabilitation in England, he was medically discharged and shipped back to Canada, being discharged at the Wolseley Barracks in London, Ontario on February 15, 1919. William passed away on October 31, 1968. BOWEN, Wayne Lawrence Wayne was born in Acton, Ontario in April 1945. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) in the mid-1960s and was stationed in Canada at Cornwallis and Shearwater. He served in Ireland and in Sweden until his release in 1967. Wayne was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion and passed away in 2012.
