45 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BECKER, Gordon Gordon was born in Port Elgin, Ontario on September 3, 1935. He joined the Army (Regular Force) in September 1954, at the age of nineteen, and spent time based in Petawawa, Gagetown, and Trois Rivières. He was released on April 29, 1958. Gord married Muriel, settled in Paisley, and raised eight children. Gord operated heavy equipment and built roads. He worked at Douglas Point and after semiretiring, he drove trucks and heavy equipment for local companies. Gord is fully retired and lives in Port Elgin. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Paisley Branch 295. BÉLANGER, Laurent J. Laurent was born in Sudbury, Ontario on November 13, 1947. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on July 29, 1964 and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical until his discharge on September 26, 1969. He spent over five years in the service where he made friends and learned a lot. He got to know Canada through postings in Chilliwack BC, Gagetown NB, and Borden and Meaford ON. He started as a soldier apprentice and was released as a corporal. He used his experience through three years of college. Laurent is a six-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 183. BEDI, Gurbachan Singh Gurbachan was born in Lahor, India on September 26, 1917. He served as a member of the Army of India from 1939 to 1945. He migrated to Canada in 1987 and acquired Citizenship after 3 years. He served with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires as Staff Sergeant with Natural Resources Canada and then with the Government Conference Centre retiring after nearly 19 years of service at the age of 90. Gurbachan’s medals include the Sewa Saniya Medal with Clasp, Indian Independence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, India Service Medal, Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, Long Service Medal in 1998, Canadian Corps of Commissionaires Long Service Clasp in 2006, Queen’s Golden Jubilee Commemoration Medal awarded by the Governor General with Citation on nomination by the City of Ottawa. His awards include: Prix OCISO Award Ontario 150 by Hon’ble Katherine Wynne Chief Minister and Yaser Arafat MPP Ottawa Centre, Ottawa Mayor’s “City Builder” award, Punjabi Heritage Foundation of Canada, Rotary Foundation International, Punjabi Senior Association Plaques, Sikh Community Services Ottawa Plaque, Saropa honour on Remembrance Day 2015 and again on September 30, 2017 by Gurdwara Sahib on 100th birthday, and kudos by the Commandant Canadian Corps of Commissionaires published in their Magazine. Gurbachan currently resides in Nepean.
