393 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WRIGHT, Kenneth William “Ken” Ken was born in Montreal on November 29, 1937. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in Montreal in July 1957 at twenty years of age. He completed Basic Training at St. Jean, Quebec, and then completed his Aero Engine training at Camp Borden. Upon graduation, Ken was stationed in Ottawa as an Air Engine Technician servicing aircraft from 1957 to 1964. He was posted to St. Hubert and Montreal between 1958 and 1969 working at the site where current astronauts train. A posting to Germany followed, where he served from 1969 to 1975. After transferring to Comox, British Columbia as an aerospace technician, Ken retired in 1982, after serving 25 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He received the NATO Medal in recognition of his service. Ken was a sixteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Uxbridge Branch 170 and resided in Uxbridge, Ontario from 2003 until his passing on December 18, 2019. YEO, Claude Claude was born in Sparta, Ontario on January 3, 1915. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers, 7th Field Company in 1939. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. His unit was one of the Canadian units selected for the daring raid on Dieppe. His landing craft was blown up. He was rescued by another craft and did not make it to shore. He was also involved in the long battle to clear the Germans from coastal ports. Claude was also involved in the Falaise Gap, where several units were mistakenly bombed by the RCAF. By VE Day, Claude was on his way home, but had volunteered for service in the Pacific. VJ Day came before he could be transferred to the sector. Claude was discharged in 1945 at the rank of Private and was awarded the 193945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the Defence Medal. He was a member of Last Post Legion Branch 410 for over thirty years. Claude passed away on October 3, 1993. YAKOWENKO, Peter “Nifty” Peter was born in 1918 in Sifton, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and was enrolled in the Militia with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry on November 22, 1940. He started active service as a Private with the Canadian Infantry on April 9, 1942 and was taken on strength by the Lincoln & Welland Regiment on December 14, 1942 and was trained as a rifleman. He went overseas to the United Kingdom on July 16, 1943. He embarked in the United Kingdom on July 20, 1944 and landed in France on July 25, 1944. He served with the Lincoln &Welland Regiment in northeast Europe for the next eight months where he was wounded twice. In January 1945, Peter married his sweetheart Betty of Brighton, Sussex, in the United Kingdom. Betty later immigrated to Canada as a war bride. He was released on February 5, 1946. Peter was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp for his service. Peter earned the nickname “Nifty” due to his sharp personal dress. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 17 in Thorold, Ontario for thirty years. Peter passed away on August 16, 1978.
