383 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WILCOCK, Richard Richard was born on June 29, 1877, inArtemesia Township, Grey City. He enlisted in the Army on March 20, 1916 and served as a Private with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles (Central Ontario Regiment) in Canada, England and France. He went to fight on the front lines and was at Vimy Ridge on fromApril 9-14. Unlike many Canadians, Richard survived this battle and moved on to Arras where fighting happened between April 22 and May 25. He would have fought at Ypres from July 31, 1917 and it is believed he died in this battle on August 1, 1917. He was stationed with the First Army which was based in underground tunnels in the limestone hillside at Arras, Longemarck and La Targette. This was part of the Battle of Passchendaele. At the present time, they cannot say how he died but do say it was probably from enemy bullets. He is now buried in the La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast. WILLOUGHBY, Thomas Harold Harold was born in Atwood, Ontario on July 2, 1897. He was raised on the farm and aided his father with the farming. On June 14, 1918, when he was 21 years old, he enlisted in London, Ontario in the 1st Depot Battalion of theWestern Ontario Regiment. He completed his training but the war was ending and he received his discharge in January 1919. He returned home and was soon married. They moved to Brussels where he became a Watkins Salesman and his wife worked in the Dry Goods Store. They had two children. Harold passed away at the early age of 61 and is buried in the Elma Cemetery in Perth County. WILKINSON, James Ernest “Ernie” Ernie was born in Lindsay, Ontario on January 2, 1934. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on May 30, 1951 and completed his basic and advanced training in Valcartier, Quebec, with the Algonquin Regiment. He served in the army as a member of the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion in Germany. In 1953, Ernie proudly followed the blue and white flag of the United Nations Peace Keeping Force to Korea in the Far East, with the 2nd Canadian Infantry Battalion, renamed in 1953 to the 4th Battalion, The Canadian Guards. Corporal Wilkinson was honourably discharged on April 1, 1955. Ernie passed away in Toronto, Ontario on June 18, 1964. For his service to his country, Ernie was awarded the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, and posthumously, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea in 1992.
