381 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WICKIE, Lawrence William Lawrence was born in Mitchell, Perth County, on March 14, 1897. His family, William and Wilemina Wickie, moved to West Monkton where they farmed. He moved to Stratford where he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on February 12, 1916, at the age of nineteen, with the 110th Battalion. He sailed from Halifax on the SS Carolina on October 31, 1916. He joined the 119th Battalion and then was taken on strength with the 8th Battalion in March 1918. He also served with the 52nd Battalion Infantry. Lawrence suffered a gunshot wound in August 1918 that fractured his femur. For his bravery in action he was awarded the A C Badge in the field. He was in hospital and was invalided to Canada on the SS Seaford in March 1919. He was discharged on June 16, 1919. Lawrence passed away on January 10, 1954 and is buried in the Knox Presbyterian Cemetery with his parents in Mitchell. WIKEN, Debra Debra was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec on November 1, 1959. She joined the CAF in November 1983, with postings at CFB Summerside, PEI, 7 CFSD Edmonton, 2 Svc Bn Petawawa and CFB Borden. Debra’s deployments were to Egypt close to the Rafah border into Gaza, the former Yugoslavia, Haiti, Golan Heights Israel, and Afghanistan before returning to Base Borden where she was an instructor in her trades apprentice and journeyman courses. She was promoted to Sergeant as a team leader overseeing students and staff members. Debra spent six years in the school before being promoted to Warrant Officer and posted to ASU Toronto. She was released in 2011. Debra became a Public Servant as a desk Officer at CFB Borden HQ, in October 2022. She decided to retire from the Public Service after twelve years giving her a total of forty years with the Federal Government. Debra enjoyed many sports while serving. She was matched with her Service Dog Sadie in 2018 and both are active members with much support from the members of the Royal Canadian Legion Alliston Branch 171 where Debra is a new member of the Executive. She has been a member for three years. WIĘCŁAWEK, Stefan Stefan was born in Germany on September 1, 1947. He immigrated to Canada in June 1950 with his family and settled in Northern Ontario. In 1952, his family moved to the Niagara area where he presently lives. In 1964, he was selected for the RCN Technical Apprentice Program. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) on August 13, 1964. Stefan began basic training at HMCS Cornwallis in August 1964 and completed it in December 1964. He was then drafted to HMCS Naden on Vancouver Island, arriving there in January 1965. He trained at Fleet School until the impending unification of the CF and the future loss of his “Square Rig” RCN uniform caused him to rethink his future. He released from the RCN in January 1967. He joined the RCNR at HMCS Malahat in April 1967. He was drafted to HMCS Porte de la Reine from June to August 1967, then to HMCS Malahat until October 1967. He returned to Niagara and was released from the RCNR on November 18, 1967 at HMCS Star in Hamilton with a rank of Leading Seaman. Stefan has been a member of Polish Veteran’s Branch 418 of The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty years and serves as Veteran’s Services Officer. He has been residing in St. Catharines since 1955.
