367 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WALLBANK, William A. “Bill” Bill was born on September 14, 1925, in England. In 1941, he joined #143 Squadron Air Training Cadets. In September 1943, he enlisted with the Royal Air Force (Regular Force) and went into aircrew training as a Wireless Air Gunner (WAG). From there he was posted to #6Advanced Flying Unit where he trained onAnsons, a twin engined bomber. Next posting was #12 Operational Training Unit (O.T.U.) at Banbury. He flew a Wellington bomber on the 1st Thousand Bomber raid on Cologne, Germany. He completed his training on a Lancaster bomber at Doncaster in March 1945. He was posted to #100 Squadron where Bill flew on the last bombing raid of the war. They also made five food drops in Holland before the war ended. Bill was demobilized in November 1947. He married Elizabeth Charlotte (Cowley) and they raised three children, Graham John, Susan Elaine and Denise Anne. In March 1954, Bill immigrated to Canada and joined his brother in Plattsville where he lived until 2014. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 and accumulated 53 years of continuous membership. Bill joined Massey Ferguson in 1974, retired as Plant Superintendent in 1985. William passed away on July 23, 2018 and is buried in Chesterfield Cemetery. WANKLIN, Herbert Maximilian Herbert was born on May 9, 1896, in Cassel, East Zorra Township, to Tobias and Josephine Haunn along with three siblings. Herbert was in the militia for two years with the 29th Regiment. Prior to World War I, he was working in New Hamburg. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Preston, Ontario on May 8, 1916 with the 111th O.S. Battalion. He sailed on the SS Tuscania on September 25, 1916 to Liverpool, England, transferred to the 17th Reserve Battalion in Sandling, and then was posted to Hastings, Bramshott and into France on May 17, 1917. He was in the battle in Lens on July 27, 1917. With shells exploding all around and half buried on a couple of occasions, he was wounded on the left leg. He was admitted to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital in Bear Wood Wokingham. The wound healed nicely but he was in shell shock. He was discharged as medically unfit for military service on April 8, 1918. In 1923, he married Mary Elanora Boehler (Dietrich) Wanklin and they raised seven children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Galt Branch 121 for seventeen years. Herbert passed away in Galt, Ontario on December 8, 1972 and is laid to rest in Mount View Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario. WALSH, John Joseph “Jack” John was born in Toronto on July 15, 1918, the son of John and Mary Ellen Walsh. During World War II, Jack, as he was known, enrolled with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in Toronto on June 17, 1942. LeadingAircraftmanWalsh served with the RCAF in Canada until he was discharged on September 5, 1945. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the BritishWar Medal 1939-1945. After the war, he worked as a driver for the TTC Department until he retired. He married Grace (Sanderson) and together they had five children. Jack was active in The Royal Canadian Legion, joining in 1973 and serving as President at Coldwater Branch 270 from 1992 to 1994, eventually being awarded Life Membership. Jack passed away on March 17, 1995, at the age of 77. He is buried in the Coldwater Cemetery.
