361 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VENTON, George A. George was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 31, 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on May 28, 1940 and served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Central Mediterranean. He was wounded in Sicily and again in Italy before being discharged on June 20, 1945. George reenlisted with the 48th Highlanders of Canada after the war and stayed until the mid1960s when he retired with the rank of Company Sergeant Major. George passed away on November 10, 1991. WADE, Albert Edward “Ted” Ted was born in Meaford, Ontario, on July 22, 1923. In 1939, he joined the Army (Regular Force) at Exhibition Place, Toronto where he got his basic training. He went overseas by boat where he recalled many soldiers being very seasick. He served in France, Germany and Italy during World War II. Ted never talked to his family about the horrors of war but did tell about visiting his aunt in Scotland while on leave. Ted was of Scottish descent. He made Sergeant and won the France and Germany Star, Italy Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal andWar Medal 19391945. Ted passed away on November 3, 2007. VERMETTE, Ernest Joseph Auguste Ernest was born on May 27, 1919, in the town of St. Joachim (Lakeshore), Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on July 24, 1940. He served with the Essex Scottish in World War II theatre in Canada, Britain, and Northwest Europe. He was awarded the Military Medal, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. Ernest was wounded in action on August 28, 1944 when firing his Bren Gun. He singlehandedly dispersed an enemy German patrol despite the fact he was suffering intense pain from a severe wound to the stomach. This action enabled his injured comrades to crawl to safety. He held his position until he was assured that his comrades were safe and only then, allowed regimental stretcher bearers to carry him to the aid post. For this action, he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery under fire. He was again wounded on February 5, 1945. While in hospital during his final stay, realizing the severity of his wounds as being terminal, he deferred his rationed medication to a wounded German soldier next to him. Ernest passed away on February 24, 1945 and was buried two days later in the Catholic Cemetery in Turnhout, Belgium.
