351 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TOBOYANT, Royal “Roy” Roy was born in Silver Water, Ontario. He served as a Private with the RCASE in the District of Sudbury duringWorldWar II. Roy married after the war and worked at a mink farm in Burnt Island. He passed away on January 10, 1993 and is now buried at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Sheshegwaning. TOMAN, Burkle Burkle was born on March 13, 1923, in New Dundee, Ontario to Ira Henry and Ethel (Kriesel) along with three siblings, Ludena May, Elgin, and Grace Elizabeth. He attended Public School in New Dundee and played in the home town band. Prior to World War II, he worked at Schneider Furniture in Waterloo as a finishing fitter. Burkle enlisted in Stratford on July 10, 1944 with the Essex Scottish Regiment RCIC. He was killed in action on February 24, 1945 and is buried in Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. Landing Aircraftman Burkle Toman is commemorated on page 571 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. TODD, Arthur Robert “Bob” Bob was born on September 23, 1923, in Hamilton, Ontario. He was serving an apprenticeship to be a machinist when he enlisted in the Canadian Army Service Corps in 1941. Assigned to be a driver, he was sent to England in 1942 to train for six months on how to drive in a convoy. In late 1942, he was sent to Sicily-Italy as part of the back-up troops and he spent two years there. During this time, Bob was attached to the British Grenadier Guards where he drove jeeps and transported ammunition and food to the troops on the front lines, returning to British headquarters with the wounded and dead. His service took him into France, Belgium and Holland. Bob returned to Canada in 1946 after serving in England, Sicily, Italy, Holland and France and he went to work for Canada Sand Papers in Plattsville. He married three times, was widowed twice and was the father of three daughters. Robert was a member on Port Elgin Branch 340 of The Royal Canadian Legion until he passed away on November 29, 2012.
