349 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THOMAS, John J. John was born on February 16, 1918, in Toronto, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1942 and soon found himself on the North Atlantic doing convoy duty. Able Seaman Thomas served as a sonar operator on HMCS Agassiz and HMCS Kamsack, both “flower” class corvettes. He left the Navy in 1945, returned to work at Kodak Canada in Toronto and in 1991, moved north to Huntsville. John transferred from Branch 213 to Huntsville Legion Branch 232. John passed away in July 2008 after 35 years as a Legion member. THOMPSON, Gordon Allen Gordon was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 28, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on November 18, 1942 and served in Canada, England and Northwest Europe until he was discharged on May 14, 1945. He suffered a war injury, the amputation of his left leg below the knee. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Gordon was a member of Colonel J.E.L. Streight Branch 210 of The Royal Canadian Legion before he passed away on June 28, 1988. THOMPSON, Frederick Alexander “Fred” Fred was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 26, 1898. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on March 23, 1915 with the 20th Battalion 2nd CEF to serve during WorldWar I. Upon completion of his training in Canada, Fred was sent to England. While awaiting deployment to the front, he contracted a serious lung disease which resulted in him being declared unfit for duty. He was given a medical discharge on October 24, 1915 and returned to Canada. He resumed life in Toronto, eventually married and raised two sons. Fred passed away on May 29, 1958.
