33 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND AUSTIN, Gordon H. “Gord” Gord was born on April 21, 1914, in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 2, 1942 and served with the Bomber Command as a wireless gunner with No. 77 Squadron in Elvington, England. After completing 33 sorties, he was discharged on May 7, 1945 and was awarded the Operation Wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force in recognition of gallant service, in that he had completed a tour of operational duty in action against the enemy. He also received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defense Medal with Clasp, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was with the Air Cadets from May 1 to October 1, 1947. He became a radio operator teaching his wife and many others upon return to civilian life. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Collingwood Branch 63. Gord passed away on August 21, 1967. BAINBRIDGE, Al Al was born on September 13, 1940, in Toronto, Ontario. The oldest of three boys, Allan grew up in Toronto and on a farm in Durham Region. After graduation from Uxbridge Secondary School, Al joined the CanadianArmed Forces (Regular Force) in 1959 in Toronto. He received his Basic Training in London, Ontario, and was then posted to Kingston for training as a Radio Technician at the Royal Canadian School of Signals. Postings in Canada included CFB Gagetown, CFB Valcartier, CFB Borden, and HQ and Signals Squadron in Calgary. Al served as a United Nations Peacekeeper on three occasions, serving in the Belgian Congo in 1962 with the 57 Canadian Signals Squadron; in Cyprus in 1970, and Cyprus again in 1976. Alan was also posted to support NATO Operations in Lahr, Germany from 1971 to 1974. Al’s last two Canadian postings were Petawawa and Downsview with the Special Forces Unit beginning in 1978. After serving in the army for 23 years, Al retired from the Canadian Armed Forces on September 8, 1982, and pursued a career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Currently, Al lives with his wife Karen in Zephyr, Ontario. He is a 24-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Uxbridge Branch 170. BAILEY, John M. John was born on March 26, 1937, in England. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on August 14, 1957 and was posted with the Royal Army Service Corps as a Bandsman. After his discharge on August 14, 1960, he studied at Chartesy Technical School and Shoredich Training College for the Furnishing Trades and became qualified as a Master Cabinetmaker. He was employed with Beresford & Hicks in London making reproduction furniture and then worked for Design Furniture Ltd making radio and TV cabinets. John studied with City & Guilds and became a teacher and taught in England. He emigrated to Canada in 1964, married Ann (Robinson) in 1965 and they raised two children, Margaret and John. He studied at University of Western Ontario’s Althouse College and received his papers as a technical teacher in Canada, teaching woodworking and drafting. He ran his own business in New Hamburg, and then went on to teach in Toronto at Victoria Park Collegiate until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532 in New Hamburg with 54 years of continuous service. John passed away in 2023.
