345 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SYMANYK, Nick Nick was born on August 15, 1920, in Kenora, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery on July 29, 1941 and served in Canada, England and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on January 22, 1946. For his service, he received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the Defence Medal. After the war, he worked as a miner at the Algoma Ore Division. Nick was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Wawa Branch 429 for thirty years before he passed away on September 20, 1976. TAYLOR, Louis Martin Louis was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 5, 1924. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery in Toronto as a gunner in 1941 and left the artillery to join the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 6, 1942. He graduated from a preaircrew course and was selected as a pilot in August 1943 with a commission. He served on a fighter squadron for fifteen months on the west coast until going overseas to the United Kingdom in April 1945 to join the 132 Squadron. He returned in July 1945. Louis was retired on completion of a term of voluntary service during an emergency and was discharged on September 12, 1945. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and Pilot’s Badge. Following his release, he continued to work in Toronto, married his sweetheart Margaret in 1954, and had a daughter, Lynne, in 1964. They moved to Brussels in the late 1960, but Lou continued to work for the MTO as a property appraiser. They loved their life and home in Brussels. Louis passed away in 1985. He was a 22-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218. TAYLOR, Beverly Thomas Beverly was born on August 15, 1924, in Bar River, a small community east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Simpson A. Taylor and Delana McWatters of Bar River. His trade was truck driving. He first tried to join the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in October 1942 but there were no openings, however he did enroll on July 28, 1943. While on a training mission over the North Sea on October 15, 1944, his plane was reported missing. Beverly’s name is inscribed on a plaque in the Knox Presbyterian Church in Tarbutt Township, east of Sault Ste. Marie.
