343 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SUTHERLAND, Leslie G. Leslie was born on November 26, 1918 in Moore Township, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in London, Ontario on March 13, 1941 and served as a Warrant Officer 2 with 2-11 Engineers and a fighter pilot with 426 Squadron in Canada, in the United Kingdom and Europe. His plane, along with another, was shot down over Holland on May 24, 1943. Initially, he was buried in Haaksbergen, Holland as an unknown soldier but his body was exhumed after the war, identified and reburied in a marked grave with a proper tombstone in the same town. Leslie received the 1939-1945 Star, the A/C Europe Star, the Defence Medal, the AMR and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. SYKES, Ralph Leonard Ralph was born in Calgary on May 7, 1939. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) in 1957 and served in Cyprus and on the US coast during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ralph resides in Guelph, Ontario. SWIRE, Oliver Garfield Oliver was born on February 12, 1894, in Oxbridge, York City, (Laird Township) Ontario to James G. and Minnie Swire. His trade is listed as farmer on his attestation document. On December 4, 1915, he joined the 144th Btn, and the 44th Btn on February 26, 1917. In 1917, he received the DCM, with Bar. He was also wounded in face and head in November 1917. Oliver was killed in action on September 28, 1918 in the Cambrai area. He is buried in the Quarry Wood British Cemetery, Cambrai, France. His name is inscribed on a plaque in the Knox Presbyterian church in Laird Township east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
