341 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STOREY, R. Maxwell R. Maxwell was born in Nassagaweya Township, Ontario on March 13, 1922. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served with the Perth Regiment during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. He was a lifetime member of The Royal Canadian LegionActon Branch. He resided in Rockwood from 1950 until his death on January 30, 2001. STURGEON, Raymond Nelson “Ray” Ray was born on August 31, 1938, in Bruce Mines, Ontario. He was the oldest of ten siblings. The family moved frequently around the area as his father worked in the mines and in logging. Ray joined the Army (Regular Force) in August 1955, at the age of seventeen, as a Soldier Apprentice, to help support the large family. Ray talked about those years, being homesick so far away from home, hitch hiking home, that long distance between Borden and Thessalon, sometime alone, other times with other boy soldiers, often in dead of winter. Ray served from 1962 to 1963 in Egypt peacekeeping UNEF. He also served at the Canadian Embassy Moscow from 1967 to 1969. He was stationed in Whitehorse, Oakville, Vancouver, and Edmonton. Ray also played hockey for the Army. He retired as Major in October 1979 and transitioned to civilian employee at National Defence retiring again in 1994 as Senior Assistant Deputy Minister (Materiel). As National Armaments Director, Ray travelled far and wide, spending much time in Europe, also in Pacific Asian countries. Ray enjoyed travel but he also loved having time with his family on their country property outside Ottawa and also with his family back in Northern Ontario. Ray passed away on November 28, 2023. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 182. STRODE, Frederick Henry Frederick was born on November 3, 1881, in Camden, London, England. He married Elizabeth Jane Kilford in 1898 in England and they had four children. Prior to serving in World War I, Frederick was a firefighter in Toronto. He joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on August 7, 1915 and served until his discharge on July 9, 1919. After the war, he married his second wife Rose Gibbons (1877-1963) on September 7, 1929. Frederick passed away on December 12, 1953 at Sunnybrook Hospital.
