337 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SPARLING, Wyam Bell Wyam was born on June 28, 1894, the son of Fletcher and Sarah Sparling of Moncrieff, Huron County. He moved to Hamilton before he was twenty years old and his parents retired to Brussels. He was a Railway Mail Clerk and he enlisted at the age of 24. His Military Service Act Number was listed in Hamilton on February 19, 1918, although he had his physical exam on October 9, 1917. He sailed for England on the SS Metagama two months later in April 1918 with the 2nd Battalion COR. He was taken on strength to the 54th Battalion and then spent time at Whitley Hospital. He then joined the 8th Res. Battalion in February 1919. He spent time in hospital again and then returned to Canada in March. Wyam was discharged on April 3, 1919. He returned to the Brussels area and married his wife Mabel in June 1919. They lived in London and had one daughter. Wyam passed away in February 1961 in London and is buried at Forrest Lawn Cemetery. STEINKE, Edward F. Edward was born on August 19, 1891, in Ladysmith, Quebec. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and he served during World War I. Edward was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Massey Branch 432 for thirty years before he passed away on September 26, 1976. STEINER, Carl John Carl was born on May 11, 1915, in Waterloo, Ontario, to George and Caroline Steiner, along with six siblings, Catherine, Margaret, Rita, Ruth, June, and Audrey. He attended the New Hamburg Public and Continuation School. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in 1940 with the Royal Canadian Engineers, receiving more than a year’s training for the task ahead. He fought in Italy, Belgium, France, Holland, and Germany. He was discharged in November 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Carl married Winifred G. Kriesel and they raised two boys, Roger and George. He was employed as the New Hamburg Post Master. Carl enjoyed woodworking and golf. He was involved with other town veterans in applying for a Royal Canadian Legion in New Hamburg which was successful in early 1952. He was Charter Member of New Hamburg Branch 532 with 41 years of continuous service and is commemorated on the Veterans Plaque in the Legions Memorial Room. Carl passed away on April 1, 1993 and is laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. He is remembered by his son Roger.
