335 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SONLEY, Lloyd Penrose Lloyd was born in Blackwater, Ontario, on May 31, 1917. He grew up and worked on the family farm until enlisting with his best friend on April 25, 1942 at the age of 25 years with the RCAF (Regular Force) and trained as an Airframe Mechanic in St. Thomas, Ontario. Lloyd and his best friend left Toronto by train some time in October 1942 en route to Halifax to ship overseas aboard the SS Caribou. Unfortunately, or fortunately, Lloyd came down with pneumonia and tonsillitis and was in the hospital having his tonsils removed and missed shipping out on the night of October 13, 1942. On October 14, 1942, the SS Caribou was sunk by German submarine U-69 along with his best friend. He was discharged on September 6, 1945 as a LAC (Leading Aircraftman) and subsequently worked in construction for the remainder of his life. Lloyd passed away on August 11, 2022, at the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital and is buried with his Sonley family in the Pinedale United Cemetery in Sunderland, Ontario. He was a fifty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Uxbridge Branch 170. SOUTH, Laura Evelyn Laura was born in Hamilton, Ontario on April 15, 1941. She served in the Primary Reserve CWAC starting as a Private, ending as a Lance Corporal from 1964 until 1968. She enjoyed the busy pace of cooking for the over two hundred men, four times a day, with a workday that started early, ending late, providing a wide variety of nutritious foods. Laura took a break to raise her four children until 1989 when she began as a Cadet instructor until 2006. With the Cadets, she was a range safety officer and enjoyed providing the Cadets with deserving outings highlighted by the trip to a base in Florida. Laura is a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Alliston Branch 171 and has held several executive positions. She currently resides in Alliston with Ed, her husband of 65 years, and enjoys her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. SOUTH, Edward Albert Edward was born in Wrightington, England on November 14, 1937. Ed and his family then came to Canada in 1947. He served in the Army, Reserve Force, Royal Regiment of Canada as a dispatch rider and rifle trainer from 1955 to 1958. To this day, Ed still remembers his 303 rifle number. He also really enjoyed drilling and marching, being a representative in the parades. Civilian life saw him working for thirty years in Orangeville at Ontario Hydro. Ed was part of the Royal Canadian Service Corps from 1963 to 1971 as a transport operator. He enjoyed the driving experience and instructional training. He also assisted with cooking if needed. Ed took these skills and was a Captain Commanding Officer in the Air Cadets from 1982 to 2002. Ed is proud to be a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. Ed is a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Alliston Branch 171 where he has been the Sargent at Arms and held other committee positions. He currently resides in Alliston with Laura, his wife of 65 years, and enjoys his four children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
