331 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Frederick Michael Frederick was born in Sept Isles, Quebec on May 8, 1955. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in December 1974 and served with CFB London at Golan Heights. He was released in July 1981. He is a ten-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Milton Branch 136 and resides in Acton, Ontario. SMITH, John Henry “Harry” Harry was born on July 26, 1884 in Saintbury, Gloucestershire, England and he immigrated to Canada in 1904. He joined the Canadian Army on September 26, 1914 and served with the 4th Canadian Infantry Battalion, 1st Brigade, in Canada, Britain and France. He fought on the front lines around Ypres and later was assigned to the Canadian Base Depot in France, probably as a payroll clerk. Back to the front lines in August 1918 with the 4th Battalion, he participated in the attack on Abancourt on October 1, 1918. His Battalion “fought forward with unsurpassed bravery under murderous machine gun and artillery fire”. After the battle, he was promoted to Lance Sergeant and awarded the Military Medal. When hostilities ceased, he marched into Germany with the Army of Occupation. He returned to Canada and farmed near Walsh, Ontario. Harry married Stella Rowles in 1920 and they raised seven children. From 1933 to 1938, Harry served on the Charlotteville Township Council and was Warden of Norfolk County. He died on June 16, 1939 and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery Soldiers’ Plot in Simcoe, Ontario. SMITH, Grant Albert Grant was born in Simcoe, Ontario on August 27, 1941. He enlisted in September 1960 and served in the Royal Canadian Navy (Regular Force) for seven years, beginning with a two-year officer training course in Esquimalt, British Columbia, and graduating as a sub-lieutenant. He served on HMCS Venture from 1960 to 1962 and then underwent a one-year flight training course with the Royal Canadian Air Force, graduating with his Naval Wings in September 1963. He was then posted to operation naval air squadron, HS-50 Sea King Squadron in Naval Air Station Shearwater, Nova Scotia, flying Sea King helicopters off the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure and HMCS Provider on anti-submarine warfare duties. Currently, Grant lives in Uxbridge, Ontario and is an eight-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Simcoe Branch 79.
