329 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SLADE, Joyaleen Eva Marie Joyaleen was born in Wadena, Saskatchewan on December 24, 1943. She joined the Navy (Regular Force) with WRCNS on February 8, 1963, at the age of nineteen, and did her basic training in Cornwallis. She trained as an Ocean Opp Operator. She served four tours in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, two tours in Argentia, Newfoundland and a tour in Ottawa with the NDHQ with Defence Intelligence in the Cold War era. Her last tour was as Coxswain for the Canadian Detachment in Whidbey Island, Washington State. She was awarded the Member of Military Merit in 1978 and the Investure with Governor General Schreyer in June 1979. Joyaleen retired on December 24, 1998 and is enjoying her retirement with her husband in Windsor, Ontario. SMITH, Frank George Frank was born on March 9, 1892, in Seaforth, Ontario, to Walter Richardson Smith and Margaret Anderson. He was a member of the Seaforth Fire Brigade in 1914 along with his brothers and cousins. Frank relocated to Port Colborne, Ontario and married Irene Herdman on August 24, 1915. One week later, Frank enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and reported for duty in Hamilton, Ontario. He went on to serve in England and in France in the 92nd and 98th Battalions. He participated in battles at Vimy Ridge and Hill 70. In September 1917 at Villers-au-Bois, Frank’s battalion was sent back from the front lines to a relief camp for some rest. On October 5, 1917, back on the front lines, their battalion was hit by several German shells in their dugouts. Frank, the unit’s padre, and an unconscious soldier were buried after a shell made a direct hit. After six and a half hours, the three were rescued with concussions and bruises. Frank returned home to Port Colborne and Irene three years and five months after they were married. They had two sons, Alan and Douglas. Frank was a Lockmaster on the Welland Canal (Lock 8) at the time of his death in 1950. SMART, John W. John was born on July 8, 1925 in Welland, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in March 1944 in Petawawa but was unable to go overseas because of feet complications. He was discharged on May 16, 1946. John passed away on May 18, 2009.
