315 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SCHMITZ, Joey Glen Joey was born in Taber, Alberta on September 19, 1964. On May 2, 1982, he joined the 20th Independent Field Battery in Lethbridge, Alberta and rolled over to Regular Force in 1985. After basic and Artillery Battle school, he was posted to 3rd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in CFB Shilo, MB and proceeded to CFB Suffield in 1990 to the Base Operations cell. He went back to Shilo in 1993 to the Survey Section which was renamed to the 1st Regiment when the Brigade closed out of Germany. In 1998, he rebadged to Geomatics Technician with a posting to Ottawa and the Mapping and Charting Establishment. He went to Sarajevo, Bosnia in 2001 and then proceeded to 1st Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Edmonton. After several exercises and Domestic Operations, he went to Kabul, Afghanistan and was posted back to Ottawa and MCE again. He went back toAfghanistan in 2008, but this time to Kandahar. Upon return, he was posted to Canadian Joint Operations Center and from there bounced around Ottawa for a few years and ended up running the Canadian Forces Map Depot for his last job in the Army. He was released on April 5, 2020 as a Warrant Officer and is currently working at the CFMD as a civilian in the Distribution cell. He is a fifteenyear member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Spencerville Branch 604. SCHWING, William William was born onAugust 20, 1911, in Czechoslovakia toWilliam and Katharina (Lauff) Schwing. He enlisted for World War II in the Army (Regular Force) on July 24, 1942 with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Basic training was a lengthy chore. William was put into the driving course i/c class 111 on May 31, 1943 and was qualified to operate self-propelled vehicles of the Department of National Defence. William was discharged on May 28, 1946. After the war, William worked on construction doing carpentry throughout Southern Ontario for Berger Construction from New Hamburg. He married Florence B. (Giilck) and they raised six children, Kathryn, William, Joanne, John, David, and Mary. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 for five years. In 1957, at the young age of 45, William passed away and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. He was escorted to his grave by his fellow comrades, Douglas Eicher, George Emslie, Clayton Nauman, Lloyd Kilgore, Howard Koehler, and Frank Cleary. William Schwing is remembered by his daughter Katherine (Eichler). SCHRAMN, Orville J. Orville was born in Stratford Ontario on May 4, 1925. He joined the Army in 1942 and served in Canada, England, France, Italy and Holland during World War II. He served on the front lines in France and was in Italy on his 18th birthday. Orville almost drowned crossing the Rhine River and was wounded by a bazooka in Holland six days before the end of the war. He returned home with the Fighting Perth Regiment in January 1946 and was discharged. Orville was awarded the War of England, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Service 1939-1945 and the Victory Medal. He married Pearl Schneider in November 1946, had three children, and returned to the job he had prior to enlisting, that of Foreman at Hastings Foundry in Stratford where he worked for nineteen years. He also worked as a Foreman at Cranes for 27 years until his retirement in 1988. Orville was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Stratford Branch 8 for more than forty years before he passed away on May 3, 2013.
