313 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUTLEDGE, Roy William Roy was born in Nova Scotia and had two siblings, Helen and James. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 26, 1939 and served with the Toronto Scottish Regiment in the United Kingdom and in Continental Europe duringWorld War II. He was discharged on December 13, 1945. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, and Defence Medal. He resided in Toronto and his date of death is unknown. SCHMIDT, Eric John Eric was born on March 6, 1919, in North Easthope Township, to Eric John and Mary Jane (Wilhelm) Schmidt along with nine siblings, Helen, Aaron, Luella, Edna, Wilfred, Lillian, Minnie, Myrtle and Eric. Prior to World War II, Eric was working on the family farm. He married Katherine (Nahrgang) and they raised four children, Jean, Sharon, Shirley and Douglas. In April 1941, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in London with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and served in Canada and Nova Scotia until he was discharged in April 1946. After the war, he worked on the farm and various other places until he retired from HyBird Turkey Farms. In 1954, he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532 in New Hamburg where he and Katherine became involved with the Executive of Legion andAuxiliary and took part in sports and games. He enjoyed making dinner for his children and grandchildren and playing cards for the rest of the day. He was proud to be a Legion member. He earned a life membership, became a Past President, and accumulated 48 years of continuous membership. Eric passed away on February 10, 2002 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. SCHAFER, Louis Michael “Lou” Louis was born on June 23, 1925, in Senate, Saskatchewan. He joined the Navy on July 1, 1944 at the age of 19. He trained first in Toronto at HMCS York and was stationed in Halifax and St. John’s, Newfoundland. He served as an Officer’s Cook on the HMCS Sault Ste. Marie. Louis was discharged on March 22, 1946 at HMCS Naden in Esquimalt BC. Louis returned to Toronto in 1946 and worked first at Canada Cartage where he met Irene Donaghy. They were married for 65 years until her death in February 2012. Louis began working at Massey Ferguson in 1949, where he retired from after 35 years as Plant Superintendent in Brantford, Ontario. Louis was involved as both a Coach and League Executive in Toronto Township (Mississauga) Minor Hockey and Streetsville Minor Baseball. After moving to Dundas, Ontario, Louis was an avid curler and competed at the highest senior curling levels. Louis moved from Dundas to Southampton in October 1987. He was a part time resident as they wintered in Sarasota, Florida. Louis worked as a handyman in Southampton for many years doing renovations, most notably the North Shore Bakery and the Southampton Hotel at what is now the Outlaw Brewery. “Lou” moved back to Toronto in September 2020. Louis passed away on July 29, 2023, at Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital.
