309 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROTH, Lloyd William Lloyd was born on February 9, 1925, in Wellesley, Ontario, to Henry and Mary (Pfanner) along with seven siblings, Clayton, Arthur Jacob, Walter J., Harry John, Doris Adeline, Margaret E. and Frederick William, Lloyd being the youngest. He completed grade eight in the Wellesley Public School. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on April 13, 1942 with the Algonquin Regiment, training took place at Fort Chippewa Barracks, North Bay. His unit was sent overseas to England where he did more training and then to France with the 23rd Field Regiment. On August 9, 1944, at the age of nineteen, Lloyd was killed in battle and is buried in Bayeux Memorial in Calvados, France. Lloyd is commemorated on page 432 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. He is remembered by his nephew Bob Wettlaufer. ROWE, Charles Charles was born in Kearney, Ontario, on September 17, 1890. Before he joined the Army, he was a teamster. He joined the Army (Regular Force) in Toronto on July 23, 1915. He served with the 74th Battalion and the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles. He embarked for Europe from Halifax on March 29, 1916, disembarked in Liverpool on April 9, 1916, and went to France on June 9, 1916. Charles was wounded around Vimy Ridge on April 11, 1917. He sailed for Canada on March 4, and arrived back on March 14, 1919. He was discharged on March 16, 1919. After the war, he settled in Cobourg, married and had two children. He retired on June 18, 1942 and passed away in Toronto on May 28, 1982. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133. ROWE, Cecil Frederick Cecil was born on September 28, 1920, in Cobourg, Ontario. After schooling, he worked as anAsbestos Worker. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 1, 1942, reported for basic training in North Bay on January 8, 1942. Cecil joined the 1st C.R.L.U. on January 30, 1942, left for Europe on March 13, 1942 on board the “Empress of Canada”, and transferred to the Royal Canadian Artillery on March 29, 1942. He was attached to 349/76 H.A.A. Bty. on July 15, 1942. On October 27, 1944, he was attached to the Regina Rifles for Infantry duty in Belgium, and on December 15, 1944 he joined the 2nd H.A.A. R.C.A. When the war ended, he was in Germany. On September 17, 1945, he boarded the “Nieuw Amsterdam” and finally he arrived in Toronto on September 25, 1945. He was discharged from the Army on November 20, 1945. In 1946, he was the Postmaster at Woodbridge, Ontario and after eleven years in that position he transferred as Postmaster to Markham, Ontario. Cecil married on September 10, 1970 at the Scarborough Junction United Church. He retired in 1982 as Transportation Manager at Canada Post. After his wife passed away due to cancer on May 10, 1998, he remarried on August 16, 2003. He is deceased now.
